DUBAI - Impressive nonsense

After driving around UAE, we returned to Dubai...

From MIDDLE EAST - UAE - Dubai

...to check out what is all the fuss about.

Just upon arrival into our room, we were delighted to be "greeted" by the breathtaking sight of Dubai fountains from the window of our room:

Without wasting too much time, we got down to the lake in front of the Burj Khalifa...

...to get a closer look at the fountains:

even though Dubai fountains is just a bigger copy of the fountains of Bellagio, WET Designs still have the skills to create a fountain amazingly beautiful from where it is just impossible to leave until the last show finishes late at night.

The next morning we headed out to explore the Downtown Dubai area

As the heat started to become unbearable, we did what all locals, Emirati and expats alike...

From MIDDLE EAST - UAE - Dubai

do when the temps go high: rush into an air conditioned mall, or in our case to the Souk al Bahar:

The rest of the day we relaxed at the pool and later in the afternoon we headed for a night in the desert (see previous post).

The following day after returning from the desert we headed off to discover the "old Dubai", at least what is left from it, starting at the Gold Souk:

After we had enough from all the gold around, we took a turn towards the Herbs Market, located just around the corner:

From MIDDLE EAST - UAE - Dubai

walking down to Dubai creek, we finally found the very little that still remained from old Dubai:

As the sun was about to set, we took a dinner cruise on the Dubai creek:

Day three was dedicated to visiting just another of those "impressive nonsense", the Palm Jumeirah.
While it is difficult for me to understand the need to build an artificial island, when quite a lot of Dubai's coastline is still empty, the Palm does what it is designed for: it impresses:
- Driving on the "trunk" of the Palm, it is unbelievable that this 2x3 lanes of highway + 2x2lanes of streets besides + monorail lined with high-rise apartment buildings is all on a man-made island built by Pakistani and Indian workers in a matter of a few years:

...build for the rich who can afford these and the even richer who can afford these...

As the heat became unbearable (again) we decided to plunge into a pool at the Aquaventure Water Park at Atlantis:

I mean into a shark-filled pool of course:

After we had enough of water slides and sharks, we checked out the "rest of" the Atlantis the Palm hotel located on the tip of the palm, which just like a lot of things in Dubai, is bigger copy (of the one in the Bahamas in this case):

Nonetheless, this further nonsense of Dubai is also impressive (that's why it was build after all)

Going by the motto of "save the best for last", we saved the world famous (and probably one of the few projects of Dubai which is unique and not a copy) Burj al Arab for the last day.

One of the best far-away views of Burj al Arab are from Jumeirah beach just outside Dubai:

For a closer and palm-shaded cooler view of the Burj al Arab,we headed to Medinat Jumeirah souk, a newly built, but very authentic-looking souk with lots of greenery, water and great views:

After going through the elaborate process of making a reservation to the skyview-bar in the Burj (mere visitors are not allowed), we were finally ready to visit the unquestionably iconic landmark of Dubai, the Burj al Arab:

Just as the exterior, its interior did not disappoint either

adhering to the motto "what looks gold, is gold" the atrium, the worlds tallest as of 2007 (wikipedia) is jaw-dropping, both from below...

and from above...

After having a great dinner including some traditional transylvanian eggplant salad (Vinetta-saláta) in the skyview bar,

it was time to give back the rental car, get some sleep and board the plane towards paradise on earth in the Indian ocean ( Hold on for the next post)...

Road trip & desert safari in UAE

After couple of extremely hot days in Abu Dhabi, we decided to go off the beaten track and headed on a road trip to Al Ain, hoping for a cooler day in the so called “Garden City”. The drive itself was pretty boring, just an empty, but top quality highway straight through the desert, with lots of sand dunes and limited signs of any human life along the way (only some run-down shelters of construction workers probably building the skyscrapers of Dubai in 50+ °C):

As we arrived to Al Ain, we headed straight to the Oasis, known for its underground irrigation system.

Despite the shadow of thousands of date palms, we could not bear the extreme heat for more than 10 minutes, thus we rushed into the Museum. It was not particularly interesting (as you can imagine, the history of UAE is not really comparable to the ancient cultures), but at least we filled our energy- and water supplies so that we were ready to visit the famous camel-market.

It was dusty and chaotic, with thousands of animals from chickens, cows, goats, etc. to camels everywhere…it didn’t take too long for us to realize that we were just as much an attraction to the traders as they were to us. Just like we were watching the camels, they were obviously watching the wife and appraised my value to 5 camels. What they could not assess was the value of the hidden baby, so luckily enough the offer was not good enough for Zoli to make the deal!

Later we headed towards the Jebel Hafeet mountain line located at the border with Oman (ca. 1300m):

The three-lane mountain road, with impressive views over the surrounding desert, may easily be called one of the greatest driving roads in the world:

Few days later, we headed for another adventure in the desert, the so called "must do" tourist attraction in UAE, the "overnight desert safari". It sounded like a truly unique experience and we were pretty excited about our desert safari package tour thinking that where else could you experience a life in the desert rather than in a desert country? Unfortunately the experience was not as "unique" as advertised. The camp was only about an hour away from Dubai (the lights could still be seen in the darkness of the night) and crowded with lots of tourists.

Pretty soon after our arrival to the camp, they announced that we could have our BBQ Dinner Buffet, whilst the long-awaited belly dancing show began.

Well, after watching some shows in other countries (Turkey, Bangkok, Brazil, etc), we came to realize that it was one of the poorest shows and has ended disappointingly soon (both the show and the dinner). Some of the tourists have barely started to eat when their driver called them for the return ride. Luckily our desert safari experience with the overnight stay was not as short as for those signing up only for the dinner. Spending the night in the desert was actually quite relaxing and pleasant after the very hot days in Dubai.

The next morning we watched the sunrise in the desert before heading back to Dubai for couple of more (very hot) days...

Abu Dhabi, the little brother

After landing in 40+ heat in the UAE, we drove from Dubai to Abu Dhabi, the little brother of Dubai.
We started our visit to Abu Dhabi at the heritage village in an attempt to get a glimpse of its history:

From MIDDLE EAST - UAE - Abu Dhabi

... a history replaced
From MIDDLE EAST - UAE - Abu Dhabi

and being replaced with modern high-rise buildings and mega-development projects everywhere:
From MIDDLE EAST - UAE - Abu Dhabi

One of the main reasons for driving to Abu Dhabi was to visit the famous Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

From MIDDLE EAST - UAE - Abu Dhabi

Built to impress, it surely does a great job in that both with its beauty (of arguable architectural style)...

and scale

We arrived just before sunset, a particularly special time to wonder this monument of faith (or money?)
From MIDDLE EAST - UAE - Abu Dhabi

Walking in, the interior is just as amazing (again with arguable style), with great attention to detail and no expense being spared...

As the sun set, the Mosque revealed a different, just as impressive appearance:
From MIDDLE EAST - UAE - Abu Dhabi

...and as it turned dark, the lights were turned on to amaze the visitors just once more...
From MIDDLE EAST - UAE - Abu Dhabi

The following day I had the feeling I could use some adrenalin, so we headed to Ferrari World

From MIDDLE EAST - UAE - Abu Dhabi

with what other scope than to ride the world's fastest roller coaster (0-250km/h in 5secs)
From MIDDLE EAST - UAE - Abu Dhabi

However, not only the Formula Rossa, but the building itself is also amazing:

Note: the picture above is NOT mine as I was not allowed to take my camera on the G-Force Ride  (the tower with the funnel around it at the center of the building):

which did offer a nice view - even though not as nice as the one above and the red color of the roof being covered by sand... so not that red anymore.

After spending a few (very hot) hours on the beach, we headed to the Emirates Palace to indulge ourselves in some luxury at one of the only two 7* hotels in the world (blog entry about the other one to follow soon)

The next day, before heading for a road trip, we visited the Abu Dhabi bazaar, in one more attempt (failed) to get a glimpse of the old Abu Dhabi:
