Tordai Sobanya - The salt mine from Torda

During our Easter break at home, we visited the newly renovated salt mine from Torda (a.k.a. Salina Turda), a giant salt mine about 30kms from our home town Kolozsvar.

Salt was first extracted here during the antiquity and the mine continuously produced table salt from the Middle Ages (the mine being first mentioned in 1075) to the early 20th century (1932). (from Wikipedia).

The salt mine has a unique microclimate the temperature remains constant (10-12 °C) all the time, at any time of the year. Humidity in the air remains constant, too, at about 75-80%.

The mine can be accessed through the newly built entrance site at Salina-Durgău, via the Franz Josef access adit:

Once inside, the mine comprises 4 great mine galleries, out of which two can be visited:

  • The bell-shaped Theresa Mine:

  • and the Rudolph Mine:

We had a great time during our visit

and we believe the Tordai Sobanya should be on the to-do list of all visitors of the Kolozs county.

Celebrations' time

The 'wedding and anniversary season' started again a few weeks ago - it's usually a very time- (and money-consuming) period for us traveling back to our home town for couple of days only, but we always love these celebrations as we basically spend the entire time in Kolozsvar with eating & drinking with our friends and families... sadly enough, we also realize from time to time that we are getting older and can't drink as much as in the good old student time any more (when Zoli just used to order his "one meter of Tequila" and was still able to walk home in the middle of the night from the party)

We probably reached our celebrations record in April, with 3 events within less than 3 days:
Two weeks later, we returned again to Romania for our 10-year Graduation Anniversary (yes, we are really sooo old, can't believe it's already been ten years since I've last been at our highschool). It was really great meeting our ex colleagues, some of us have changed quite a lot, others still look and behave just like 10 years ago...

Visit to Kolozsvar

After our weekend in Budapest, I spent a few days in Kolozsvar visiting my family and friends. It was a great opportunity to hand over to my brother and Molly their birthday presents - two flight tickets to Rome, which we are gonna enjoy together in two weeks.

I was planning to help Zoli's parents at harvesting the grapes, but unfortunately there were not too much grapes to collect this year and by the time I popped in, the grape juice was already being warmed up... so at least I took the chance to take some pictures of the beautiful garden:
